My Hair – A Love Hate Relationship

I think it’s fairly safe to say that at some point everyone gets a hair cut, or a colour (or maybe just wakes up one day with hair) that they hate. I pretty much live in a constant state of hair hate.  I might like it for a little while but I get bored or I change shampoo and suddenly my hair does nothing the same as it used too.

When I was young my hair was straight, I normally wore it in a bob with a fringe or long and shapeless, all in all it was OK hair.  It’s always been very fine, but generally speaking there was nothing wrong with it .  When I was about 12 I took myself along to the hairdresser and thus began my hair issues.  I had about 3 or 4 inches off and without that extra weight my hair sprang into some kind of wavy, kinky mess.  I think I saw people from school on my way home and they laughed at me, never before had anyone laughed at me for my hair so I knew it was dreadful.  Truth be told, looking back now, it wasn’t that bad, I just didn’t know what to do with it. After years of washing and air drying with no issues I now had to put thought into it. I survived this haircut by scraping it back into a ponytail and ignoring it.  (I won’t talk about the time I crimped it for the school disco… people who didn’t go asked if it was true I really had an afro…)

It wasn’t until I was 16 or so that I really started to think more about my hair.  There had been a few bobs and fringes, but up until I hit my Emo phase I just let it do what it wanted.

Emo brought with it very short hair with a long fringe, black hair dye, lots of product and for a short time, a bright red fringe.  In a lot of way this was some of my favourite hair times.  Keeping it short and messy meant there was very little for me to do with it.  Maybe run a straightener over the fringe, but that’s about it. Only thing I didn’t enjoy was my hairdresser telling me the photo I’d brought in was of a boy and did I know that… And did I still want the haircut? Maybe some pretty layers instead, with a bit of feathering?

This opened the way to keeping my hair pretty short through my late teens and early twenties, and a particular favourite of mine was my platinum pixie cut. I’d have that back in a shot if I still had the face shape for it!

My latest trick is growing out my fringe just to cut it back in as soon as it’s reach the right length.  On occasion I even cut it myself, I think I got pretty good at it.  I’m currently in the growing out stage, having returned to the bob with fringe look, again.

The most recent disappointment was when bleaching it straighten out some really lovely curls I was just getting the hang of.  And of course I got bored of the blonde and home dyed it ginger, which I also got bored of and dyed it, what was supposed to be brown but turned out red.

I’ve had some great hair ideas, I thought about rainbow coloured hair. For a while I wanted some kind of mermaid blue/green wavy look.  I’ve thought about and actually attempted to dye the underside of my hair green… I do sometimes consider just shaving it all of but I’m scared I might have a weird head.

Cliche time… It’s just hair! It grows back!  If there’s one thing I’ve learned and I’m sure will continue learning it’s that it really doesn’t matter what you do. It will grow back,  and if things get really bad there are some fantastic wigs out there.

OOTD – Denim Jacket

This jacket has been one of my favourite things this summer, and I’m looking forward to getting more regular use out of it in Autumn. I bought it the very day these photos were taken.  It was the evening of a work do, when I got into the city and felt that, as comfortable as I was, I look a little scruffy and not good scruffy.  I popped into Next and there was the jacket, on sale, £16 down from £45. What more can you ask for! I got it a size up for extra oversized-ness.  It helped give my outfit a more ‘put together but relaxed’ look.

Tshirt – Levi’s

Jeans – Next (but these are similar)

Brunch – A Wild Thyme

Does anyone not like brunch?  I feel as though everyone must love brunch…  Have a lie in, stroll into the city and eat breakfasty or lunchy foods, depending on your preference! And going for brunch with a friend? Even better.

A few weeks ago a friend and I went to Wild Thyme in Norwich, a great veggie/vegan place.  She’s vegan and I really shouldn’t eat dairy so having pretty much a whole menu to choose from is always a big deal for us.

We stared off with Spice Turmeric, Oat Milk Lattes which were heavenly.  Ten times better than the classic Chai Latte and I’m a big fan of the Chai Latte.

Of course, even in a restaurant with a menu full of delicious vegan foods, we both still wanted things that contained dairy.  Our lovely waitress offered to pop to the shop downstairs and pick up some dairy free yogurt for us.

I’ve eaten in Wild Thyme a lot and I can honestly say I’ve never been disappointed with the food or the service.  It’s a beautiful location and they have kept the ambiance inside in keeping with the courtyard outside.

In terms of price, it is a little more on the pricey side but it’s definitely worth it.  Nice for a date, a meal with the parents or just a fancy brunch date with a bestie.

Favourites: July Edition

For my July favourites I want to focus on my favourite household objects.  More specifically my favourite objects in my favourite room.

We have recently moved house and are working our way through the rooms getting them just the way we like them.  The first room was my dressing room / office, I might do a post on that another time.  We are just putting the final touches to the living room, this is the room that’s quickly become my favourite.

We don’t have a TV (we watch a lot of Netflix and DVDs) so we normally just load whatever we want to watch up on a laptop.  Our living room is very minimal and I love that your eye isn’t drawn to a massive black rectangle as soon as you step in.

For our anniversary we bought ourselves a new radio/CD player/Bluetooth speaker system.  We are in love with it, it looks really sleek and a bit retro and is super simple to use and set up.  The sound quality is great and it comes with a whole load of features like an alarm and a sleep timer that we’ve not really looked into yet.

We have a lot of green in our lives. Hubby’s parents recently adopted our cats and since then we have felt a real lack of life in the house – plants are the next best thing to pets I think. They lift your mood and they can be interesting to watch grow and change.  They will fill the four legged gap until we are ready to welcome a new fur baby into our lives.

I’m a knitter, and, as such, I make many many blankets, cushions and sometimes foot stools!  Knitted fabric is a wonderful texture and when it’s a nice colourful pattern it can be a real feature in your room, we have a table/basket (we got ours from IKEA) that holds all our blankets when it’s too hot for them.

Everyone loves a candle, right? I particularly like The White Company for candles. At the moment we have Ocean Tide.

We are planning to add a chair and a coffee table to this room and then it’s done done done!

What’s your favourite room and why? Let me know down below!

OOTD – Hat Outfit

I’m still very much in the process of getting my wardrobe together,  I want to have a good basic wardrobe, something capsule like, and then build from there.  Part of this process is putting together outfits, wearing them and seeing how I feel!

I’ve always played it pretty safe, I don’t like the feeling of people looking at me in public so I normally try not to stand out with what I wear.  On the other hand I want to wear what I think looks good and what I feel comfortable in.  I’ll often put an outfit off because I think people will look at me, when in reality people don’t really give a shit what I’m wearing and I should care what people think! So I’m putting together some odd outfits and trying them out, if I feel good in them it’s a success and then I’ll start looking at other ways to style those pieces.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA5e5da198-f8f9-4eee-ab16-5f36ad5d7b4c

For this outfit I wanted to style my favourite white shirt with a skirt I rarely wear because I’m unsure if it’s flattering, I wanted to wear boots because I quite like the look of ankle boots with a skirt but I’m worried it makes my legs look stumpy.  Then accessioning, I wore the coat to bring it together a bit, it made to look a little smarter I think, my bag is my everyday brown bag and then the hat.  The hat was the real uncertainty, I asked my mum on her thoughts and she wasn’t convinced and normally that would be enough to send the hat back to the clothes rail, but this time I thought ‘No’.  I wore it and loved it.  Even if it was way too hot for it…

All in all I think this look has an edgy smartness too it, something I’d wear to a nice lunch with fancy people, I feel better about the skirt and the hat so they will move on to the next round of styling.  It’s kind of like a game show for clothes!

Thanks to Laura at Rose and Weston for taking these pics!

I like to add links to the actually items I’m wearing where I can, however where that isn’t possible I will link to a similarly priced and designed item.

Plantation Gardens Cinema – Alien

In space no-one can hear you scream…

On Thursday night I went along to The Plantation Gardens here in Norwich to watch Alien on the big screen, it was fantastic!  I’ve never been into The Plantation Gardens before and even with a screen and lots of chairs set up, it still looked beautiful.

It was a fantastic location for an outdoor cinema. They set up a bar with drinks and nibbles. Some people brought along their own food and you could tell which groups were veteran outdoor cinema goers, we shivered in our camp chairs while other people donned hats, gloves and snuggled under blankets.

Of course I had to dress for the occasion and wore my Weyland-Yutani Corp t shirt, other than that I was dressed for comfort.alien

Favourites : June Edition

This month has been a real mix of a month for me.  It’s had some stresses and some excitements.  We just got our first car, we’re moving house and I’ve changed my working structure.  All very exciting but also very stressful. Here’s a few things I’ve been doing this month to keep stress to a minimum.

I’ve been trying to focus on some self care, keeping myself relaxed and chilled out.  If you read my last blog post you’ll see my new favourite deep cleanse skin routine. (These are the products I love)  It’s not an everyday routine but once a week I really like to give my face the TLC it deserves.

Painting my nails is not really something I’ve ever kept on top of, but this month I’ve tried to keep my nails freshly painted at all times. I enjoy taking the time to carefully apply the varnish and letting my hands rest for 30mins while they dry.  I particularly like Essie nail polish, there are so many great colours and with my Sally Hansen Double Duty base and top coat, I’m getting about a weeks wear out of them before they start chipping. Here I’m using the colour Cocktail Bling.

Me and Andrew have been re-watching How I Met Your Mother, it’s such a great show. When we both get in from work we don’t really feel like watching anything new, watching an old favourite is so relaxing and HIMYM is totally brain chewing gum.

Other than that I’ve been drinking a lot of tea, tea is my saviour for a stressful day.  A good mug of Yorkshire tea, perfect!

Skin Care Routine – Deep Clean

My skin has been in serious need of some care.  It’s been dry, oily and I’ve been breaking out really bad.  When my skin gets bad it really effects my confidence and makes me much less likely to take care of myself, it’s a vicious cycle!

This weekend after watching a bunch of skincare videos on YouTube and poking at my face a bit, I decided to give it some much needed TLC.  The products I used are not things I would use together everyday but for a really deep clean it’s worked really well and my skin feels fresh and clean.  It’s noticeably clearer.

Having clean skin is a much better base for your make-up too, you’ll use less products trying to cover dark patches, blackheads or blemishes.  I feel much more confident skipping the foundation if my skin is having a good day, and that helps it breath and ultimately I’ll have more good days!

img_0114img_0116img_0124img_0134
I used my Simple Cleansing Oil to breakdown and make-up or dirt on my face, this product is fantastic: it’s the first cleansing oil I’ve used and see no need to try anything else at the moment.

Next is my Dr. Organic Dead Sea Mud Mask, this leaves my skin smooth and fresh.  On my nose I like to use something that really targets the black heads.  I get a lot of black heads on my nose but these Boots Tea Tree and Which Hazel with Activated Charcoal nose strips are amazing.  I see results right away.  Plus the satisfying ‘look what came out of my face’ thing after you take it off. I know its kinda gross but come on, we all love it.

It’s time to tone!  A step I used to ignore because I felt it really dried out my skin, but if you’ve got a good moisturiser then you should be good. Toning is really important for closing your pores, controlling oil and keeping your skin fresh.  I have two toners I like, first is another Dr. Organic and also one from the body shop.

The nose strips come with a moisturising strip which feels so good, I could leave it on forever.  I’ll use whatever moisturiser I’m most into and depending on whether it’s day or night will change that, I like to use an SPF for the daytime, but I don’t need it at night.  Right now I’m finishing up a little pot of the Body Shop Vitamin E cream. Around my eyes I use some of the Elderflower Gel, this is great for morning or night, it gives brightness and moisture.

I finished up at bed time with a Night Treatment Gel from Boots on top of that I use an Anti-Stress Sleeping Masque from & Other Stories.

Don’t forget your lips!  A quick scrub with a LUSH lip scrub and a really thick lip balm.

I was in face heaven, my skin looks and feels great, and it’s so relaxing to indulge in some self care.

Happy Skin Care Times! x
