Top 5 Places to Eat Lunch – Norwich

Norwich is fantastic for food.  I feel like there’s always somewhere new to try.  I’ve tried to pick a few different kinda of eateries to put into my top 5. They are in no particular order.

Wild Thyme
Smashed Avocado on Toast; Organic Yogurt with Fresh Fruit; Peanut butter, Banana and Blueberry Pancakes and a Spiced Turmeric Oat Milk Latte.

Wild thyme – Nestled behind a row of shops with a cute courtyard outside.  You enter up a set of stairs into a smallish room very simply styled.  It’s a veggie/vegan restaurant with an extensive menu, from breakfasts to curries and something for all tastes. Although probably suited more for older guests as I don’t believe they have a children’s menu.  Personally I consider Wild Thyme to be a planned meal out kind of place rather than a drop in for a bite to eat.  It’s a little higher in price than the other places on my list but the food is well worth it.  You can read about my brunch if you like! *Just to note, due to a fire in the shop below, Wild Thyme is currently closed.  Keep an eye on their website for more details.

Moorish – You can find Moorish in one of Norwich’s busy lanes, Lower Goat Lane to be precise.  If you go during lunch time hours then you might have to wait a while because this place is always busy.   Moorish is a falafel bar with a focused menu – there’s 3 options – but when they do it this well, be glad you don’t have too much choice.  You have the option to customise with added toppings and sauces, so you can make your wrap, pitta or salad just how you like it.  Plus they do lemonade that’s to die for.  And for an added bonus they are part of Norwich’s Last Straw Campaign and are selling reusable metal straws!

Pono
Poke Bowl; Smashed Avo on Toast and a Berry Breeze Smoothie.

Pono – I visited Pono twice in two days, it’s bright, clean and simply beautiful inside. During these warmer days we’ve been having Pono’s menu is the perfect thing. Another place that’s picked a few meals to offer and is doing them well.  Customise your own salad bowl, choose from three ‘Smoothie Bowls’, go for a classic ‘Smashed Avo on Toast’ or try a twist on a traditional ‘Poke Bowl’.  The fresh smoothies are divine, I always go for the Berry Breeze.  And to add to the summer vibes, they have just started doing iced coffee. Yes! I think they sum themselves up pretty well on their website ‘We are a superfood bar inspired by Hawaiian culture, selling healthy, nutritious food without feeling like you’re making sacrifices’.

Saporita – A favourite of mine and my dad’s.  If we get a chance to meet for lunch in the city this is normally where we go.  They have a wide selection of Italian street food including, focaccia, panini and pizza slices.  Saporita is a family run business and is homely and friendly.  I don’t know if the woman behind the counter actually recognises us when we go in, but we are greeted with a big smile and warm hellos that make us feel like we’re returning to a friend.  There’s a lot to choose from and they offer a good selection of vegetarian and a vegan option.  While scrolling through their menu I’ve noticed they offer a Tiramisu in the desserts section and I’ve fallen even more in love with this place.  Anyone want to meet for lunch?

The Waffle House – If you haven’t been to The Waffle House, then have you really been to Norwich?  This was one of the first places my dad took me just after he relocated here nearly 10 years ago.  What can I say about The Waffle House that’s not already been said in it’s long (and interesting) history? They serve waffles, the best in Norwich.  Ok I’ve not had many waffles in Norwich other than these, but why would I when there’s The Waffle House!?  There is something for everyone, and they can offer options if you have dietary requirements.  I’ve seen queues outside before it’s even opened and I’ve stood in that queue many times and I imagine I will stand it in many times more.  “Waffle House?” is a question with only one answer. “Hell yes!”

Autumn Bucket List

I’ve seen a lot of people doing a kind of seasonal bucket list and I really like the idea.  It can be really easy to miss out on the changing seasons, what with work and life taking up so much time.  Having a small list of things you’d really like to do and planning time to do them is a great way to ensure you really appreciate your time.  It can be so easy to make no plans and waste a weekend or day off.  Here’s my Autumn to-do list!

  1. Have a snuggle picnic.  I totally made up the name of this. I wanted to go for a picnic during the summer and never did.  So I’d like to pack up loads of blankets and cushions and snuggle up in a park with an autumnal picnic!
  2. Bake Parkin and/or Gingerbread. Parkin is a traditionally northern English cake or biscuit.  Like gingerbread but made with black treacle.  Perfect for nibbling around a bonfire.
  3. Go fruit picking. Any Norwich based folks with tips on where to pick fruit hit me up!
  4. Have a dinner Party. For me, Autumn feels like the perfect time to fill your house with friends and delicious food.
  5. Carve a Pumpkin. Ok so it’s cliche but I do love carving pumpkins and it lends itself perfectly to my last one…
  6. Make pumpkin pie (and make mum try it). I love pumpkin pie and it shocks me that my mother has never had it. (although that would explain why I never had any until my 20s).  This year I’ll be sure to get mum to try some.  This is my favourite recipe


It’s taken me to the end of this list to see that I obviously like food in Autumn…. All food based!

Favourites September Edition – Summer Memories

This summer brought with it a lot of change and a lot of excitement. Of course my birthday should be the highlight of summer for everyone around me, but this year we had other things to celebrate.

Since I’ve been married I have been sharing my husband with another being.  I think it’s fair to call it a being because it’s taken up so much of his time and energy, has caused us excitements, stresses and disappointments. This summer my husband finished his PhD and is now officially Dr Mundy.  We attended his graduation in Manchester and it felt like some kind of birth/funeral hybrid. 


This trip also brought with it another excitement, driving. Earlier in the year I passed my driving test (second try, all the best drivers pass second time).  We bought an old car from a work friend and the 5 hour drive from Norwich to Derbyshire was the first long drive I made.  I had to do all the driving, it was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying. 

We moved house (again. We have lived in a different house for every year we have been married). Moving brought us closer to our allotment from which we got our first (and last) harvest! We’ll still be eating the potatoes at Christmas.  We also abandoned the idea of an allotment in favour of a container garden.

Plus there was A LOT of great coffees and brunches with Laura from Rose and Weston. More of that in Autumn please!

Brunch – A Wild Thyme

Does anyone not like brunch?  I feel as though everyone must love brunch…  Have a lie in, stroll into the city and eat breakfasty or lunchy foods, depending on your preference! And going for brunch with a friend? Even better.


A few weeks ago a friend and I went to Wild Thyme in Norwich, a great veggie/vegan place.  She’s vegan and I really shouldn’t eat dairy so having pretty much a whole menu to choose from is always a big deal for us.

We stared off with Spice Turmeric, Oat Milk Lattes which were heavenly.  Ten times better than the classic Chai Latte and I’m a big fan of the Chai Latte.

Of course, even in a restaurant with a menu full of delicious vegan foods, we both still wanted things that contained dairy.  Our lovely waitress offered to pop to the shop downstairs and pick up some dairy free yogurt for us.

Banana Pancakes, Avocado on Toast and Yogurt with Fruit

I’ve eaten in Wild Thyme a lot and I can honestly say I’ve never been disappointed with the food or the service.  It’s a beautiful location and they have kept the ambiance inside in keeping with the courtyard outside.

In terms of price, it is a little more on the pricey side but it’s definitely worth it.  Nice for a date, a meal with the parents or just a fancy brunch date with a bestie.

Nan’s Christmas Cake

Every year me and my dad have the discussion ‘who’s going to make the Christmas cake?’ We use a recipe from an old cookbook of my Nan’s that makes two cakes. One of us will make the cakes, keep one for ourself and deliver the other when we have our Christmas time visit. It’s a tradition that I love.

This year we made the cakes together and because we all now live in Norwich we’ll all get to enjoy both cakes this Christmas. We’ll have a day to make the almond paste (we use this instead of marzipan) and then a few days before Christmas we’ll ice it. The first slice is enjoyed on Christmas Day when we settle down with a nice hot cup of tea to follow our Christmas dinner.

Eating Vegan

I love eating meat, but only because it tastes good, I don’t like the environmental impact or the way its produced,  it can carry a lot of unpleasant things and it’s one of the main causes of food poisoning in the UK.  These are good reasons to give up meat!  My husband doesn’t  eat meat so half the battle (getting meat out of my diet) is already done, the hardest part will be eating out and eating with friends.  So vegetarianism is really quite appealing, however…

For quite awhile now I’ve thought I might be lactose intolerant, I’ve tried giving up milk here and there but never really completely given up dairy to see if it makes a difference.  After seeing some delicious looking vegan food on Pinterest I thought, why not take the plunge, go the whole hog and become vegan?

It’s scary, it was kind of an over night decision which means that for the first few weeks I’ll mostly only be dairy free, just because we have meat in the freezer that I’m not going to throw away.  I’ll be making vegan meals and adding meat as a side, switching the roles of meat and plants in my diet before cutting meat out completely!

Today is my fist day focusing on the plant element of my diet and cutting out as much animal product as possible.  I accidentally put honey in my porridge. But again, it’s a product that needs finishing (my husband hates honey).  It’s going to be a challenge and I don’t for one minute think it will be easy, but I’m really excited and in many ways that’s the first hurdle, getting excited about anything and everything you do makes it much easier! Obviously I’m cutting the dairy out for health reasons rather that anything else and I think that’s going to be the hardest part, I’m choosing to give up meat, but because I feel like my health will benefit from cutting out dairy, in my mind, it feels like the decision is out of my hands, it’s something I need to do.

For years we’ve been cooking two meals to “accommodate” my husband, I’m quite looking forward to being the awkward one!
